Student Exhibitions (back to top)

A special gallery at the Museum has been designated for student exhibitions, and each year artwork is showcased from local public and private school students in grades K-12.  Through a partnership with the Pinellas County Schools, art teachers are invited to submit their best student artwork to be included in this exhibition series.  An independent juror selects the work to be included and recognizes exceptional work with awards.  The Museum professionally mats, frames, and installs the work in the gallery, then hosts a special opening reception and awards ceremony for each exhibition.  In addition to providing a creative opportunity for young artists, this program recognizes talented students and promotes community awareness and support for art education.

Docent and Tours Program (back to top

The Museum’s Education Department trains docents to provide interpretive educational tours. Upon request, school children, civic and social clubs, and special interest organizations are provided guided tours of the Museum’s exhibitions.

School Tours Program (back to top)

The cornerstone of the Museum’s educational programming is its school tours. These docent-led tours have been carefully designed with the input of art and classroom teachers, to compliment the art curriculum for students to fulfill FCAT and Sunshine State Standard requirements. Each school is provided a teacher’s guide prior to the class visit to the Museum, which prepares the students to recognize art concepts related to the exhibitions they will visit. Each class is also provided a hands-on opportunity to create a rubbing utilizing bronze plaques depicting endangered birds and animals. Docent led tours for school groups are free of charge.  The Museum has produced a learning kit with DVD based on the Permanent Collection with a study guide to enhance the Museum visit as well as provide a virtual visit experience to those who cannot visit.  This has been distributed free of charge to more than 150 elementary public and private school art departments as well as home schooled groups.
